The World’s first floating private islands get the green light in Dubai
Lucy Wang
The World, Dubai’s artificial archipelago of over 300 islands, will soon be home to 33 luxury floating homes, each with its own garden, pool, and beach and tailor-made to the client’s tastes. Created as part of Oqyana World First, these private island homes were recently given the go-ahead by the Dubai-based government entity Nakheel. Architecture firm Waterstudio.NL collaborated with Jean-Michel Cousteau to design the floating islands, which will also be engineered to provide new underwater habitat for sea life.
Designed in the shape of the seven continents, Dubai’s The World project covers an area of 931 hectares, measuring nine kilometers in width and seven kilometers in length. The luxury development includes residential islands, commercial areas with resorts, transit hubs for ferries, and a tourism zone. The islands range in size from 150,000 to 450,000 square feet.
The man-made floating islands will be completely stable on the water and will be built to last over a century. The customizable islands will be created to the client’s specifications and include underwater habitat. The Oqyana Real Estate and Amillarah Private Islands developers plan to offer similar floating homes in the Maldives and off the coast of Miami in the U.S. The 33 luxury floating homes are not yet available for sale.

Wearable Ergonomic Device Promises Good Posture, Regardless of What Chair You Sit In
When furniture design doesn't involve furniture
I was disappointed to find that my lazy body can defeat even the most expensive ergonomic chair. No amount of fancy adjustable features will stop me from eventually slouching as I become more absorbed in work.I'm not alone in this, and to address the problem, entrepreneur and sciatica-pain sufferer Katherine Krug has collaborated with two industrial designers to produce an object that seems it will end slouching once and for all. Called Better Back, the device is not a chair at all, but a wearable harness that "stabilizes your pelvis, [restores] your spine's natural curvature, and provides lumbar support."

Air-Cleansing Apps
Blueair is an App-Controlled Air Monitor to Ensure Indoor Air Quality
The air monitoring device can now detect how many airborne particles the air is filled with. In addition, this small device can check the temperature, humidity and carbon dioxide to produce a better report. When the report is produced and the air is not up to par, the air purifier notifies the Blueair smartphone app. It is then up to the user to turn on the app-controlled air purifying system. This ensures the best quality indoor air is obtained at all times.
In addition to the advanced technology, the brand has also expanded the color selection to include a deep red, leafy green, dark blue, white, black and gray.

Shocking Photographs Showing What It Means To Live In A “Small” Space
Published by Boogie nuggets in Inspirations
The Japanese are famous for making practical use of small living areas, a requirement of their high population density. Inspired by this fact, photographer Won Kim created the series “Living Close”, showing the residents of what is best defined as a guesthouse for backpackers in Tokyo.
The photographer states: “Some of the people in these images stay at the facility for a relatively short time, for other residents these tiny cubicles are essentially permanent homes.
For me, the real interest of the resulting portraits is in how each resident has made use of a such a small, confining space. The sharply-defined space and its contents tell something about its occupant’s personality, and his or her ability to function in such a strange, enclosed environment.”

PSFK Labs Launches The Desktop Debrief
PSFK
by Simone Spilka
PSFK Labs is excited to present The Desktop Debrief, a comprehensive lowdown of trends in the modern office that inspire happier, more productive workers.
In this report available to purchase here, PSFK Labs showcases the findings of #onmydesk, a research initiative in which we asked readers to share images of their contemporary workspaces on Twitter. PSFK awarded the top entries with $100 gift cards over 10 consecutive days.
PSFK Labs segments trends of items—carefully and thoughtfully arranged items—that people keep near to them each working day, and illustrate why they’re conducive to better working habits.
The Desktop Debrief illustrates how a ‘superior’ work environment is dependent on a range of variables that shift from company to company, or employee to freelancer. Office space architecture, desk layout and employees’ musical and design preferences each play a role in determining the company culture, therefore impacting the happiness of the employees.
Trends also illustrate a shift in the landscape of the workforce, with 53 million Americans in 2015 working in some type of freelance capacity. With that, the settings in which we take meetings, interact with clients or brainstorm with a teams are also evolving.
PSFK Labs researchers found that design agencies keep stacks of magazines scattered around for visual inspiration; CEOs and writers carry post-it notes and analog calendars for meetings and ideas; most everyone has drinking vessels to stay hydrated. While these commonplace objects might carry less meaning standalone, their placement on the deskscape hold significant meaning when adjacent to screens and devices. A family photo provides us with a sense of purpose on a particularly busy day, or a small plant might offer a moment of serenity in a tech-heavy environment.
The Desktop Debrief provides original insight into how office layout, personal style, placement of devices and desktop design positively impact workplace well-being. To learn more, buy The Desktop Debrief here.
