The 7 Best Ideas From CES 2016

The Consumer Electronics Show holds thousands of new ideas. But these are the ones that will matter into the future.

This week in Las Vegas, the electronics industry assembled to woo journalists with the shiny new toys of the year. Most of them aren’t worth your time: Thinner TVs. Dumb objects with Wi-Fi. Apps you’ll never use.
But if you have the patience to sort through the pile, the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) will show you the trends to come: 2016 will be a year of virtual reality, big drones, small mechanics, and wireless power. Here are the best ideas from CES 2016:

Game-Changing Product Design: Small L16 Camera Replaces an SLR and a Bag Full of Lenses

Market research shows that 50% of folks who own an SLR camera no longer use it. It's simply too bulky to carry around, especially with a full complement of lenses, and most of us find it more convenient to shoot with our phones.
Enter brilliant inventor Rajiv Laroia, who stopped carrying his SLR for the reason mentioned above. Laroia observed that tiny, smartphone-sized camera lenses were becoming more and more affordable, and he then spent nine months studying optics to design a camera that would incorporate them. The result is the Light L16 camera, which incorporates 16 lenses, each with their own sensor, and fires 10 of them with every shot.

Trnasparent Solar Panel Windows

Solar Panel Windows

This Innovation Turns Solar Cell Technology Completely Transparent

Published: • References: extremetech & themindunleashed.org
Windows don’t typically do a whole lot more than let natural light in and a person’s gaze out, but what if solar cell technology had the potential to double as an invisible energy source? Material engineers at Michigan State University have developed a transparent solar cell that could transform every window into a source of power.

At first the technology altered the color and transparency of glass, giving off a kaleidoscope effect that was not very natural. However, this process led engineers to discover that they could make the active layer of the system transparent or essentially invisible. How? The solar cell absorbs and transmits light in the ultraviolet and infrared spectrum of wavelengths that the human eye cannot see.

This technology is not limited to windows, but has the ability to replace any glass surface -- smartphone screens, e-readers and laptops could become invisible energy sources that are able to charge themselves. Installed in a home, you could even be able to say goodbye to dreaded electricity bills.

3D-Printed Knit Sneakers

These Kicks Made From Polymer Yarn are Completely Recyclable

Published: Jul 14, 2015 • References: dezeen & dezeen
Royal College of Art graduate Ammo Liao created these knit sneakers for the 2015 graduation show. The sneakers are called Bio-Knit trainers due to the eco-friendly fabric each shoe is made with. Every part of the shoe from the soles to the uppers is made from a 3D-printed recyclable material.

The shoes are made from a single polymer yarn-like material that is extremely flexible and allows each shoe to be comfortable and easily movable. The uppers of each shoe are knitted flat and then attached to the 3D-printed sole.

The idea for the knit sneakers came from Ammo Liao’s desire to create a shoe that could be recycled. The use of a single polymer allows the entire shoe to be recycled without going through a sorting process, which saves money, time and resources.

4DX Motion Seating Makes Viewers Feel Part of a Film

With movie theater attendance dropping in recent years, many cinemas are making moves to enhance viewer entertainment and boost box office revenues—one surefire way to satisfy both is with 4DX motion seating.

CJ's 4DX Lab in Los Angeles recently hosted a Mad Max screening to show off the effects of the immersive theater chairs. As vehicles in the movie rumbled across the desert, so did the chairs. Bullets being shot at characters were simulated with puffs of air and the dry desert winds were recreated with wall-mounted fans, smoke and fog machines.

These 4D seats are often installed to take up a few rows in a normal movie theater, or take up an entire auditorium, complete with strobe lights and pneumatic lifts. Now that summer blockbusters like Jurassic World, Ant-Man and the newest Mission Impossible are in theaters, motion artists are working to program these seats to offer a movie experience that can't be recreated at home.

danit peleg 3D prints entire graduate fashion collection at home

for her fashion graduate collection at shenkar, danit peleg wanted to do something very different. she skipped the sewing machines and fabrics, and went straight towards 3D printing machines. it was a struggle, because she barely knew anything about the technology, and creating entire dresses from home scale 3D printers hasn’t really been done yet. influenced by triangular painting compositions, her first piece was a red jacket. using 3D rendering software called blender, just produced files that danit started experimenting with a variety of materials and printers. alongside the help of 3D printing experts techfactoryplus and XLN, she got her hands a different printers polyactic acid plastics (PLA).

Consumer-Targeting Billboards

OfferMoments Creates Custom, Targeted Advertisements

Published: • References: offermoments & ibeaconsblog
By making it possible to create targeted advertisements on billboards, OfferMoments promises to be the most "scary yet exciting" thing you've seen in marketing in a while.

Once a consumer downloads the app, they are able to get tailored notifications when walking by digital displays on the street or in-store. For instance, if you were to walk by a coffee shop with Bluetooth activated on your smartphone, using "OfferBeacons," OfferMoments alerts you that you're eligible to come in and try a new coffee at a discount—it will even call you out by name.

Now that many brands are looking to beacon technology to hyper-target marketing efforts to one rather than many, it's no surprise that OfferMoments was named the winner of the Venturefest in 2014 and is now a part of Virgin Startup.

Amsterdam’s new 3D-printed steel bridge is revolutionizing the building industry

Heijmans, the innovative Dutch construction company behind the smart highway and glowing Van Gogh-inspired bicycle paths, has unveiled their latest avant-garde project: a 3D-printed steel bridge in the heart of Amsterdam. Created in collaboration with Dutch startup MX3D and designed by Dutch designer Joris Laarman, the 3D-printed pedestrian bridge is part of Heijmans’ aspirations of building the “spatial contours of tomorrow.” Multi-axis industrial robots will construct the pedestrian bridge using cost-effective and scalable technologies.

Wi-Fi That Charges Your Gadgets Is Closer Than You Think

It’s easy to take Wi-Fi for granted (as long as you have the password). But what if it did more than facilitate your Pinterest habit? What if instead of just connecting your devices to the Internet, it charged them as well, no wires required?
That’s the promise of new research from a team at the University of Washington, which has developed what it’s calling a “power over Wi-Fi” system that can recharge batteries through the air, from up to 28 feet away.

Bionic Lens

A new bionic lens implant could give patients the unique ability to see three times better than standard 20/20 vision for the rest of their lives.
Dr. Garth Webb, founder and CEO of Ocumetics Technology Corp, a company committed to eliminating glasses and contact lenses for patients, invented the Ocumetics Bionic Lens, which resembles a small button.
The lens inside the patient’s eye is removed and replaced with an artificial lens, much like cataract surgery. The process then involves flushing the eye with a saline solution. Just 10 seconds after the implant is in place, the folded lens opens up, moves itself over the eye’s natural lens and vision is improved, the company says.
The lens was created after eight years of research and $3 million in funding for research, international patents and trials. The patent is expected to be available as soon as 2017, as long as clinical trials go as planned.
