Netflix announces 'unlimited' maternity and paternity leave (NFLX)

reed hastings, netflix, sv100 2015
Employees at Netflix will now have unlimited time with their newborns during the child’s first year after birth. According to a recent post on Netflix’s blog, the company is offering “unlimited” maternity and paternity leave to its employees.
The post says Netflix employees “can return part-time, full-time, or return and then go back out as needed. We’ll just keep paying them normally, eliminating the headache of switching to state or disability pay.”
Netflix already has unlimited time off, so this change doesn’t mark a substantial shift in policy as much as it shows a willingness of the company to be kid friendly. Netflix says it wants to compete for the best workers, and is acknowledging sometimes these workers are parents.
Perhaps the company just wanted to give a little something back to its employees, who helped it reach another all-time high on Tuesday. The stock rose more than 8% in trading, as high as $122.79 per share.

Not Impossible Labs Creates Open-Source Technology for Transformational Good

PSFK by Simone Spilka

Not Impossible Labs aims to create accessible technology on an open-source platform in the spaces of mobility, health and communication, and then use storytelling to inspire others to do the same.

The company with a massive vision to do good for humanity first caught our attention when developing the EyeWriter, an open-source software that enabled TEMPT, a paralyzed graffiti artist with ALS, the ability to paint again. The technology, a low-cost pair of eye-tracking glasses, allows TEMPT to control a virtual paint brush by blinking to turn it on and off, and moving his eyes to draw.

PSFK catches up with Not Impossible Labs Founder Mick Ebeling about his new book Not Impossible, the journey in working with TEMPT and other DIY initiatives that have the power to improve the lives of people around the world.

PSFK: Can you tell me about your background and that of Not Impossible Labs?

Mick Ebeling: Not Impossible Labs started after being inspired by TEMPT and creating the EyeWriter, looking at its success and questioning why we shouldn’t do it again.

I’m a political scientist, but I am a producer. Science isn’t my background. The reason we’ve been successful is the way in which we approach things from the perspective of a producer. A producer looks at what needs to be done regardless of whether or not they have the expertise, then figure out how to pull it off.

A Coffee Roastery Serves Up Jobs for the Homeless

DSC_1628.jpg
Lucy, a barista at Old Spike Roastery in London, isn’t your typical coffee shop employee. She’s very friendly, but she has only just started to learn English. She can make a mean flat white, yet she learned how to do so only five months ago, when the shop’s owners hired her right off the street.
And her story is emblematic of the mission at Old Spike, a coffee roastery founded by Cemel Ezal and Richard Robinson, that focuses on helping the local homeless population as much as it does on serving up conscientious cups of joe.
The pair initially began speaking with Lucy—who is originally from Romania—when they saw her selling copies of the Big Issue outside a train station, drawn in by her consistently positive attitude. After a few conversations through Google Translate, they convinced her to join Old Spike as the store’s first barista.

Coca-Cola : This Vending Machine Encourages People to Share by Giving Two Bottles

Published:
JetBlue and Coca-Cola teamed up to create this cola ad and publicity stunt that encouraged people in an airport to share a coke. The coke machine was set up to produce two coke bottles each time someone used it. Instead of keeping both bottles the consumers were encouraged to share the second bottle, which read "humanity" on the label.

This public display was captured on a hidden video camera inside New York’s Penn Station. The machine was set up for one day. During that one day over 150 people used the machine and 70 percent of those users shared their second bottle of coke with a stranger. This heart-warming cola ad was implemented to support Coca-Cola's 'Share a Coke with Humanity' stance.

Each person who shared a coke with a stranger was congratulated for their humanity-supporting act by receiving two free flight tickets. While the consumers had no idea there was an incentive for their kindness, it made the entire interaction even more special.

Transgender Model Agencies

Apple Model Management is an Agency Exclusively for Transgender Talent

Published: • References: applemodels & refinery29
Apple Model Management is a Thai agency that deals entirely with transgender models that will soon be opening up a Los Angeles location. While the Thai division currently represents around 22 transgender models in Asia, the launch of the trans-only agency in LA will provide huge employment opportunities for both transgender men and women in the United States.

As powerful women like Laverne Cox, Andrej Pejic and Caitlyn Jenner are coming into the spotlight as voices for a variety of transgender issues, the public is beginning to gain acceptance and understanding of and prejudices put upon the community.

By opening this agency LA, this could mean that transgender models could be included in more of everything from runway shows to editorials and commercials.

Your Next Adventure Can Help Impoverished Communities

Help Impoverished Communities
Onwards Travel, a Wisconsin-based non-profit, has found a way to use tourist dollars to fuel local, small town economies. By purchasing their adventure packages, you not only get an organized tour but you also help communities fund their own development.
The startup was founded by Jacob Taddy who saw how a Dominican Republic town transformed from an agricultural sleeper into a hit destination through tourism. In the early 2000s, during the government’s decision to move farmers off from a protected forest to greenhouses, international aide organization workers flocked to Rio Limpio. The rise in visitors provided occupants to bed and breakfasts, diners for local restaurants and sent youth-led tour guides a constant stream of clients.
Taddy then found a way to accelerate this tourism-led growth through microfinance for budding local entrepreneurs. Merging both fields, Onwards Travel was born. Aside from organizing tours to its pioneering area, the Caribbean, the company also provides small loans to local business owners.
Here’s how it works: the startup’s client Raquel opens a bed and breakfast with a $950 loan from Onward Travel. The startup also books her B&B for its guests, helping Raquel pay her loan back and also providing her with a steady stream of income. Aside from micro-financing schemes, the startup also plans to provide business training and professional development for locals in the tourism industry.
Help Impoverished Communities
To fuel the drive, Onwards Travel is now turning to crowdfunding to grow its lending pool. Eyeing a $10,000-run, the Indiegogo campaign offers those who pledge a discount off their next tour bookings with additional perks. For $50, backers can get a T-shirt and Sticker plus a $50-discount off a booking made through Onwards Travel within the next two years. For a $1,000 pledge, backers can get a spot on the next trip to a new location.
As of press time, Onwards Travel is offering two trips. An 8-day trip and a 9-day trip in the DR, the latter including a border crossing to Haiti. The trips expose tourists to rural life against breathtaking natural landscapes. Veering from “slum tourism”, Onward Travel aims to show adventurers how communities can grow and prosper through the tourism industry.

Packaging to Show the Uselessness of Packagings

Advertising agency Leo Burnett Switzerland created a tongue-in-cheek campaign that’ll appeal to both selfie and fine art lovers. Three posters feature the iconic artists Vincent Van Gogh, Frida Kahlo, and Albrecht Dürer snapping their picture using the Samsung NX Mini camera – the tagline for the campaign is For Self-Portraits. Not Selfies. In each image, the subject holds the NX Mini as the viewfinder reveals a mirrored portrait.

Stress-Reducing Coloring Books

Stress-Reducing Coloring Books

These Adult Coloring Books are Designed to Fight High Stress Levels

Published: Jul 14, 2015 • References: runningpress & demilked

These adult coloring books created by Hannah Davies, Richard Merritt and Jo Taylor are designed to reduce stress and increase relaxation. By soothing the cluttered mind of adults and encouraging them to focus solely on the not-so-important task at hand, it can bring peace to their busy brains.

Coloring books are designed to entertain and distract children, but they can do the same for adults. Children are happy to sit and color for hours on end and it is important for adults to retain the simple exercise they once thoroughly enjoyed.

This adult coloring book is certainly not meant for children. Each page presents a wildly intricate drawing of a creature or scene that requires time and commitment to color and complete in full. The idea behind the Creative Therapy books is to bring stress levels down and elevate calmness among adults.

Forever Young: Photographer Muir Vidler Celebrates The Age-Defying Antics Of Britain’s Senior Citizens

Muir Vidler - photographsMuir Vidler‘s admiration for individuals who are challenging the status quo first began in a popular club called Love Muscle in London. It was there that he was inspired to start a long running, charming photographic series called Rebels Without A Pause. About people (usually senior citizens) who are refusing to ‘act their age’ and are defining their life on their own terms, the series is full of wonderful spirit and charm.
This dance club was where Vidler met Adrian Delgoffe – a man in his late 60s, wearing leather pants and a leather harness, dancing by himself. The photographer remembers applauding this man, who was older than Dad, out at night, living large, instead of being dormant in front of the TV at home. Vidler reflects:
Adrian got me thinking about people who don’t let their age define who they are, what they wear, how they act – people that make the world a more interesting and fun place, a better place. I wanted to shoot some portraits that celebrated those people, the people that never grew up. (Source)
The British born photographer tracks down interesting individuals and arranges photo shoots, usually in their private homes, or at a location of their choice. He has met several young-at-heart characters, who, in their old age are proudly covered in tattoos – and are adding more still. Isobel Varley for example, holds the Guinness Book Of Records as ‘The World’s Most Tattooed Senior Woman’ and shows no sign of slowing down: since being photographed, she has acquired many new penis tattoos on her face.
Vidler has photographed circus performers, nudists, veteran rock n rollers, old bikers, die hard roadies, leather fetishists and ‘slave owners’, Elvis impersonators, and the first openly gay skinhead. You can see his full collection of portraits and other surreal experiences on his Instagram account here.

How Victoria’s Secret Swimsuits Look On Everyday Women

This revealing photo-series compares models wearing Victoria’s Secret swimsuits and everyday women working for BuzzFeed. The shoot took place on a beach in Malibu where each woman tried to re-create the pose and look of the original Victoria’s Secret shot. Although there was ample opportunity to feel self-conscious, the experience yielded some insightful commentary.

One woman reflected, “I think everyone should get photographed on the beach in a bathing suit at some point in their life…it is a really fun experience that kind of helps you to get over any insecurities.” Another shared a similar sentiment: ”We may not all be models, but the world is a runway for ALL of us.”
