Befriend 10 Nearby Strangers Anonymously

PSFK by Ido Lechner

No Facebook, no phone number, no authorization nor names, Nod is an ‘anonymous proximity messenger’ app available on the app store. Not to be confused with NOD, News on Demand, or the other Nod— send custom built emojis to your friends—this Nod operates under the assumption that you have no friends, or simply want more (we’ll go with that one).

Requiring an updated iOs 8.3 or later, Nod is a group-chat-based ephemeral messaging on-the-go social network allowing chat rooms of up to 10 people.

Starting as a simple prototype in the office of a small startup studio, the company is currently in the process of building a community so as to streamline the intended function of the app itself. Realizing that many locations may not have a lot of Nod users, if at all, Nod will cleverly send messages via anonymous email to remedy the occasional ghost town.

With all said and done, PSFK decided to try out Nod for ourselves. In downloading the app, we spoke to a couple of strangers who all seemed to point out the same thing: the user interface is not very good.

As some guy put it best, “a chat interface shouldn’t need a tutorial.” Given the app’s clustered nature, it’s safe to say the platform won’t be a viable method for drug dealing or sex trafficking, though it won’t stop the anonymous pool from speaking about it.
